Essential Functions

Who we are
The Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) administers the retirement and group health benefit programs for the employees and retirees of State of Texas agencies and some higher education institutions. These benefits contribute to the financial security and overall well-being of State of Texas employees, retirees and their families and help to make Texas a great place to live, work and visit.  The Customer Benefits (CB) Division is looking for two (2)  Administrative Assistants to join our team.  CB counsels and educations members and retirees by answering questions related to retirement eligibility and processing, service purchase costs, account withdrawal processing, beneficiary updates, insurance enrollment and eligibility, and other basic inquiries.  CB handles over 500,000 member/retiree calls and e-emails and counsels over 5,000 member/retirees through in person visit.  CB is responsible for the processing of retirement annuities, survivor benefits, and specialty retirements, which include disability retirements, qualified domestic relations order, and other unique groups of individuals.  CB also has designated staff to serve as the support for agency benefit coordinators ad serve as the benefit coordinator for retirees and direct pay participants.  Customer Benefits prides itself in providing superior service experiences by collaborating in a cohesive ad supportive manner to instill confidence and trust in those we serve.  The Administrative Assistant II will support this mission by advocating for their customers using communication, influence, and critical thinking to provide pro-active customer service.

What we need
Someone that will thrive in a fast-paced business environment who is a strategic visionary and can collaborate with individuals by developing and maintaining strong working relationships.  You must be an analytical thinker, a self-started, have a keen eye for detail, have strong organization and communication skills, meet with members and explain benefits, and be motivated to meet the demands of customer requests.  You will perform routine administrative support work.  Work will involve processing and disseminating information regarding program benefits, entering information in the system, creating reports, researching and respond to inquiries, maintaining filing systems, and performing administrative support work.  You will work under moderate supervision of the Benefit Support Service Supervisor with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

What you will do
  • Research, verify and process member’s retirement account withdrawals.
  • Research, verify and process member’s beneficiary designations.
  • Research and respond to customer requests and inquiries. Updates member information in the systems and tracks member interactions.
  • Prepare standard correspondence relating to benefit programs.
  • Analyze, scan, and upload documents in the system by allocating to proper business workflow.
  • Maintain records and files, and create reports.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  1. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
  2. Two (2) years of experience in clerical or administrative support work.

Preferred Qualifications

Your application for employment should reflect how you meet the following preferred qualifications:
  1. Experience working with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  2. Experience managing multiple tasks with competing deadlines and priorities.
