Additional Service Credit (ASC)
Additional Service Credit (ASC) for Former Employees
ASC is cost-neutral type of service purchase. It’s more expensive than other types of service credit. The cost is different for everyone because it is based on your average or current salary, earliest retirement date, age and other factors. To buy ASC, you must:
- have already purchased all other service credit available to you
- have 10 years of ERS service credit (not counting military service credit and unused sick/annual leave),
- purchase in blocks of one year unless you have already applied for retirement and only need months to reach retirement eligibility, and
- be actively contributing to ERS at the time of purchase.
You must purchase all other available service, such as withdrawn, waiting period or military service before you can purchase ASC.

The maximum ASC purchase went from five years to three years on January 1, 2006. If you purchased three, four or five years of ASC by December 31, 2005, you can keep it all, but you cannot purchase more.
