Nominations are in for ERS Board trustee candidates (state agencies only)

April 06, 2023

hand putting ballot in voting boxDuring March, ERS received nominations for the Board seat up for election this year. The nominating period closed March 31.

The next step is for ERS to certify that the nominees are eligible to fill the Board position, which is currently held by Catherine Melvin of the Department of Public Safety. ERS will conduct the candidate certification on April 13. After that, voters can read the candidates’ statements and learn more about them on the ERS Trustee Elections and Appointments webpage.

Candidate forum in May

On May 11, ERS will host a candidate forum so voters can hear from the candidates directly. Each candidate will provide an opening statement and answer questions about their positions on benefits issues. You can send questions for the candidates to ERSelection@ers.texas.gov by May 8. We will ask the candidates as many questions as time permits during the forum.

ERS members and retirees are welcome to attend the forum in the Capitol Complex in Austin. ERS will provide the forum’s exact location and time, along with other election details, in the May issue of News About Your Benefits and on our election webpage. We will also provide a recording of the forum on the election webpage throughout the voting period, May 12 - June 16.

Election process

In early May, ERS will mail eligible voters information about the candidates, along with a paper ballot and instructions for electronic voting. We encourage employees to vote electronically,  a more convenient and secure process that also saves money for the ERS Retirement Trust Fund.

ERS will certify the Board election results on July 20. The new trustee’s term will begin Sept. 1, 2023.

ERS will continue to provide election information in upcoming issues of News About Your Benefits and on the ERS Trustee Election and Appointments webpage.
