Group Benefits Programs
The Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) is the administrator for the GBP, which provides health & welfare benefits to its participants. GBP participants are employees of state agencies and certain higher education entities, their dependents and retirees. As of August 2013, there are approximately 516,565 participants in the GBP.
Overview of the Group Benefits Program
ERS contracts with health, dental, life, disability carriers, and third-party administrators to provide coverage for GBP participants and administer such coverage throughout the state of Texas. Our current programs include:
- Dental Care
- Life Insurance and Voluntary AD&D
- Disability Insurance
- Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
- Long Term Care Insurance
Texas Employees Group Benefits Program History
The Texas Employees Group Benefits Program (GBP), formerly the Texas Employees Uniform Group Insurance Program, began September 1, 1976. The GBP was implemented to meet the stated purposes of Texas Employees Group Benefits Act, Chapter 1551. The Act requires uniformity in health, life, and accident insurance benefits for all employees and retirees of state agencies and institutions of higher education.
