Texas ERS earns national award for pension excellence

AUSTIN – The Employees Retirement System of Texas, which manages pensions for state employees, law enforcement personnel and judges, recently earned national recognition.

The Public Pension Coordinating Council presented ERS with the 2024 Public Pension Standards Award for Funding and Administration. The PPCC is a coalition of the National Association of State Retirement Administrators, the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems and the National Council on Teacher Retirement and represents more than 500 of the largest pension plans in the United States.

“We are honored to receive the award from the PPCC,” ERS Executive Director Porter Wilson said. “The award is a testament to ERS’ dedicated staff, who are top professionals in their fields. It is also a product of the support ERS receives from the Texas Legislature, which enacted funding reforms in 2021 that stabilized the state’s pension plans and put them on track to full funding.”

As part of its work, the PPCC established public pension standards to reflect minimum expectations for public retirement system management, administration and funding. The standards serve as a benchmark to measure public defined benefit plans.
