Health Benefits

Findings: Nearly 85%25 of employees consider the GBP to be a valuable part of their total compensation/retirement package. More than half (56%25) of retirees said the defind benefit retirement plan meets their needs.New employees are eligible for health coverage through the Texas Employees Group Benefits Program (GBP). According to the recent ERS Retirement and Benefits Survey Report almost 85 percent of employees consider the Texas Employees Group Benefits Program (GBP) to be a valuable part of their total compensation. 

Health coverage benefits include:

ERS also offers wellness programs to improve the quality of the life and longevity of its employees such as:

  • tobacco cessation.


Most employees of Texas agencies become members of the ERS retirement plan as soon as they start working. The state retirement plan is a defined benefit plan. That means, as an employee when you choose to retire after reaching eligibility, you will get a monthly payment (or annuity) for the rest of your life— no matter how long you live.

Tuition Reimbursement

Upon the approval of the Executive Director, ERS may reimburse an employee for the cost of tuition, fees and books incurred for classes that are job related and are taken at an accredited college or university as defined by Education Code, Chapter 61.003 for the completion of a degree program. 

ERS will only reimburse cost after you have successfully completed the course with a passing grade of at least a ‘C’ or the equivalent. Reimbursement is subject to the availability of funds and currently is limited to $2,500 per semester with a maximum annual reimbursement of $7,500.
