Employee Perks and Benefits
The Employees Retirement System of Texas’ (ERS) mission is to offer competitive benefits to enhance the lives of its members. To show our commitment to this mission we provide an array of valuable benefits to our employees, retirees and their eligible dependents.
New employees are eligible for health coverage through the Texas Employees Group Benefits Program (GBP). According to the recent ERS Retirement and Benefits Survey Report almost 85 percent of employees consider the Texas Employees Group Benefits Program (GBP) to be a valuable part of their total compensation.

RetirementMost employees of Texas agencies become members of the ERS retirement plan as soon as they start working. The state retirement plan is a defined benefit plan. That means, as an employee when you choose to retire after reaching eligibility, you will get a monthly payment (or annuity) for the rest of your life— no matter how long you live.
Note: Employees of higher education institutions do not participate in the ERS retirement program. Visit the Higher Education Employees page for more information.

Upon the approval of the Executive Director, ERS may reimburse an employee for the cost of tuition, fees and books incurred for classes that are job related and are taken at an accredited college or university as defined by Education Code, Chapter 61.003 for the completion of a degree program.
ERS will only reimburse cost after you have successfully completed the course with a passing grade of at least a ‘C’ or the equivalent. Reimbursement is subject to the availability of funds and currently is limited to $2,500 per semester with a maximum annual reimbursement of $7,500.
ERS understands that work-life balance is important for today’s workforce. To help you achieve this balance we offer flexible works schedules, wellness incentives and a variety of leaves such as:
- bereavement and
- jury duty.
